The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that U.S. President Donald Trump expressed a preference for the United States to exit the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade pact but gave mixed signals about the renewal deadline and did not threaten to leave outright. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Trump told reporters in Paris before dining with French President Emmanuel Macron after the G7 summit: "I'm thinking we might not make a deal. I'd prefer not to have CUSMA. I wanted it mainly because there was no way out of NAFTA, which I consider the worst trade agreement ever." Mr. Trump added: "I'd rather leave it unsigned, I'd rather have it terminated. I would rather not have the agreement, but I may sign it." The CUSMA agreement is up for renewal by July 1, though the U.S. has ruled that out. Barring renewal, it enters a rolling review for 10 years before expiring if not renewed. The president has often argued that Canada and Mexico need trade pacts with the U.S. more than the U.S. needs them, using this disparity as leverage for better trade terms. Mr. Trump has mused privately about quitting but has not publicly threatened to do so, nor has the President given the required six months notice.
