The National Post reports in it Tuesday, Aug. 18, edition that Canada is a day away from 50-per-cent tariffs on many exports to the United States, and opinions vary on Ottawa's response. The Post's Ellie Hutchings writes that in an Abacus Data poll, 36 per cent of respondents support counter-tariffs despite potential price increases and escalation, while 30 per cent prefer ongoing negotiations. Only 18 per cent support giving concessions to the U.S., like easing dairy restrictions or ending alcohol bans, even for tariff removal. Abacus Data indicates that the public wants a firm government that minimizes escalation and achieves an agreement without conceding too much. However, opinions vary by region and political affiliation: only 12 per cent of Quebeckers are open to concessions, versus 23 per cent in Alberta. Concessions are favoured by 16 per cent of Liberal supporters, 14 per cent of NDP supporters, and 26 per cent of Conservatives. The survey examined Canadians' awareness of ongoing tariff negotiations with the U.S. and found that Canadians are paying close attention, with 91 per cent saying they have seen, read or heard at least a little about the threatened 50-per-cent tariffs.
