The National Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to speak with President Donald Trump as Canada prepares for a 50-per-cent tariff on $29-billion worth of goods. The Post's Jordan Gowling writes that Mr. Carney described the negotiations as intense and delicate but did not specify what a good deal for Canada would be. He assured reporters that his government has a plan for every scenario and emphasized that it's not the time for public discussions about negotiations. He said, "We'll have opportunities over the next 48 hours to discuss in more detail as the negotiations go forward." Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette remained in Washington over the weekend, meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for a fifth time Sunday. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's department is responsible for the sectoral tariffs on metals, autos and forest products. Sources say the U.S. and Canada remain "very far apart" on a deal. Canada is seeking relief on Section 232 tariffs on lumber, autos, steel and aluminum. Along with tariffs, the two sides are discussing co-operation on energy and defence issues, including purchases of F-35 fighter aircraft.
