The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Meta plans to spend more than $13-billion to build a massive artificial-intelligence data centre in Sturgeon county, north of Edmonton, marking its first such facility in Canada. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that Meta's new data centre is described as a one-gigawatt facility, which is comparable to the electricity consumption of Edmonton, drawing about 1.4 gigawatts. The data-centre campus will be built on 1,750 acres of land, well over the size of Stanley Park in Vancouver. The project's energy consumption will dwarf recently announced data centre plans from BCE's Bell Canada and Telus. Pembina Pipeline, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management are constructing a $4.6-billion natural gas plant, the Greenlight Electricity Centre, in Sturgeon county to meet the electricity needs of an unnamed data centre. The project was announced last year. Meta confirmed its involvement on Wednesday. The Alberta government has been attracting big tech companies by promoting the province's abundant natural gas resources to power energy-demanding data centres. Demand for these facilities has been booming amid growing AI development and adoption.
