The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 28, edition that with the U.S. midterm elections looming, voters will soon decide control of the House and Senate. The Globe's David Berman writes that there's a lot at stake. But should investors be concerned? Politics has become central for investors due to the Iran war's influence on trade, energy prices and debt costs. Despite the noise, keeping a broad portfolio of U.S. stocks has paid off; the S&P 500 has risen 34 per cent since President Donald Trump's 2024 election victory. However, political decisions still matter. Energy stocks have surged due to Mr. Trump's conflict with Iran, while artificial intelligence-related stocks face minimal regulatory scrutiny. Conversely, let's not forget about bonds. Prices have been hit as inflationary pressures build, sending yields higher and leaving investors wondering if a financial crisis could be brewing. Corporate profits are rising at a rapid pace. But just 10 companies -- including Nvidia, Micron Technology and Meta -- within the S&P 500 account for about two-thirds of this growth, according to an analysis in The Wall Street Journal. That could make stocks sensitive to a pullback regardless of how the midterms turn out.
