The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the federal government is investigating the accidental removal of a privacy provision in its Online Streaming Act. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that University of Ottawa law professor Michael Geist noted that this provision was removed just two months after the bill became law, through an amendment in another bill. The Heritage Department acknowledged the issue, stating they are looking into what appears to be an inadvertent oversight. Mr. Geist commented that this seems to confirm the government made a mistake. The Online Streaming Act updated Canada's Broadcasting Act to capture on-line streamers like Netflix. Senator Julie Miville-Dechene introduced an amendment to the Online Streaming Act, based on the federal Privacy Commissioner's recommendation, ensuring the legislation aligns with individuals' right to privacy. Two months after the Online Streaming Act was enacted in April, 2023, the government passed an official languages bill that amended the streaming legislation. Instead of replacing a similar provision, the bill removed the privacy provision, resulting in two provisions about linguistic communities and none addressing privacy.
