The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, Jan. 13, edition that copper stocks are beginning to trade higher. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that money is pouring into Canada's mining sector. Mining companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange had raised $12-billion last year as of October, more than the $10-billion they raised in all of 2024 and the $7.6-billion raised in 2023. There have been signs that policy-makers are awake to the notion that mine supply -- beyond copper -- does not always respond to the demand pull. For example, the federal government last year struck an agreement with to develop a graphite mine in Quebec and agreed to pay a minimum price for any graphite the mine produces. Such a price floor can assure other investors and help the company attract the necessary capital to build the mine. Bentley Allan, a professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who studies supply chains, has advocated for such government involvement to address the complex challenges of a commodity such as copper. "This is the right tool because it addresses a market failure and gives investors confidence," he said about the arrangement the federal government struck with the graphite company.
