Post highlights why Enbridge, others still won't bite

The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that the recent pipeline approval plan by Ottawa and Alberta highlights the challenges Canada faces in building infrastructure, driven more by politics than market demand. The Post's Carmen Jerema writes that Premier Danielle Smith announced the province will propose a new pipeline to the West Coast by July 1. In exchange for its designation as a project of "national interest," Alberta will raise its industrial carbon tax to $130 a tonne from $95 a tonne by 2035. This tax change is just one of many obstacles facing new energy projects. Any pipeline will be contingent on the development of a massive carbon capture facility, while still being subject to much of the typical regulations faced by any other project. Not to mention that it will give anti-energy B.C. Premier David Eby an effective veto. Ottawa has agreed not to implement a carbon emissions cap in the province, but this is less of a concession and more a form of extortion to get Alberta to agree to multiple other environmental roadblocks. This legislation is loaded with unnecessarily onerous environmental and political assessments. This is largely why Canada can't build anything right now.
