The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Anil Tahiliani at Matco Financial in Calgary, recently bought Quarterhill (last, $2.57). The Globe's Brenda Bouw quotes Mr. Tahiliani saying that Quarterhill "is another company we like that has shifted its business model. Quarterhill has gone from patent licensing [through its former Wi-Lan division] to focusing entirely on toll-road software and hardware. We bought the stock back in April at around $1.45 a share and participated in its recent equity financing used to help with its purchase of another tolling company [Conduent Business Services, LLC]. We think this acquisition will help Quarterhill become a bigger player in the tolling services space and attract more investors." Mr. Tahiliani notes that Canadian small caps have been on a roll and he sees more gains to come for investors who choose correctly. "It's a hidden gem in terms of opportunities," says the senior portfolio manager who oversees $320-million of his firm's $860-million in assets. Because most investors focus on large-cap stocks, Mr. Tahiliani says small-cap valuations are often cheaper than large caps and can have higher earnings growth rates. He adds small caps are not always higher risk.
