The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that RioCan REIT says there is an opportunity to help the health-care system across the country while at the same time chipping away at vacancies. The Post's Garry Marr writes that Riocan, which holds a 200-property portfolio, primarily retail, has been exploring the concept in recent months. Jennifer Suess has been charged with identifying opportunities to create "healthier communities" while adding value to the portfolio. RioCan embraced that philosophy this month by joining with North York General Hospital in Toronto for a one-day community health and information clinic at its Yonge Sheppard Centre. The target was to address high rates of heart diseases and diabetes with the goal of setting up every visitor with a primary caregiver. The clinic followed the February launch of a 500-square-foot walk-in virtual care clinic connected with the Hospital for Sick Children at the Lawrence Allen Centre, the first ever virtual clinic for sick kids beyond hospital walls. "We are looking to bring access to primary care into shopping centres, particularly in areas where you have a lot of new Canadians or patients who don't have access to primary care solutions," Ms. Suess said.
