SCANDIUM CANADA'S SCALIUM+ ADVANCING ITS AL-SC ALLOY UNDER CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY R&D CONTRIBUTION TO REDUCE MASS OF COMPONENTS IN SPACE APPLICATIONS
Scandium Canada Ltd.'s wholly owned subsidiary, Scalium+, is advancing the adaptation of the Scalium aluminum-scandium alloy for space applications, notably next-generation Canadian satellites, under an existing contribution agreement with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The agreement provides a non-repayable contribution of $348,750, supporting a project that extends to May 31, 2028.
Alloy to reduce mass of components in space applications
The financed project, titled "Proof of Concept of Innovative High-Strength Aluminum Alloy to Reduce Mass of Components in Space Applications," aims to adapt Scalium, an ultrastrong aluminum-scandium alloy currently produced in thin sheets, into thick plates suitable for aerospace needs.
Following successful initial laboratory tests, the work program focuses on scaling up manufacturing, validating the alloy's performance and demonstrating its use for next-generation Canadian satellites. Scalium could help reduce launch costs, lower carbon emissions and allow spacecraft to carry more valuable equipment.
The project is conducted under the CSA's space technology development program (STDP), announcement of opportunity 9.2, space research and development, small businesses. This project is undertaken with the financial support of the Canadian Space Agency.
The agreement
The contribution agreement was originally signed on Aug. 29, 2025, between the CSA and Ferreol Technologies, prior to its acquisition by Scandium Canada, completed on June 29, 2026. On Aug. 17, 2026, the CSA signed an amendment, formally confirming Scalium+ as beneficiary of the agreement, and noting that the management team, mission, technologies and business relationships of the beneficiary remain unchanged. The project continues under the agreement's existing terms.

"Adapting Scalium from thin sheet to thick plate is a defined technical program with clear milestones through 2028, carried out by our team in Quebec, and it advances Scandium Canada's mine-to-alloys strategy."
