Globe says history does not favour a Tesla-SpaceX union

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the history of conglomerates is one of "it seemed like a good idea at the time," that are often unwound. Guest columnist Tom Bradley writes that expansion for the sake of synergies and diversification is followed by contraction in the name of focus and value creation. Now Elon Musk is looking to bring Tesla into the SpaceX fold. There may have never been a tycoon who has garnered such unwavering shareholder loyalty as Mr. Musk. Since Tesla took off, he has been able to do whatever he wanted. Boards and shareholders have dutifully followed along when he changes directions, and there's hardly been a whimper about lack of focus or weak corporate governance. The question now is, will the glow around Mr. Musk allow him to deal with the challenges his sprawling conglomerate will face, or will "Musk Corp." follow the same well-worn path of other business empires? Will complexity overshadow the fact that the company is the leading auto maker and data centre developer in the world, and that it has a near monopoly on low-Earth orbit satellites? The corporate union won't change the fact that the Musk empire has generated little profit and has an abysmal governance record.
