The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 29, edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she and David Eby agree on plans to further expand the Trans Mountain pipeline, and she pledged to keep the British Columbia Premier in the loop as she prepares to release a proposal for an entirely new pipeline in June. The Globe's Bill Curry and Ian Bailey write that the Premier's comments followed a meeting with Mr. Eby and Prime Minister Mark Carney on Parliament Hill. Mr. Carney emphasized that expanding energy exports to Asia is crucial for Canada to diversify its trade relationships amid rising U.S. tariffs. Ms. Smith said the two provinces have "a lot of common ground," highlighting developments in liquefied natural gas, electricity market integration and the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta to Burnaby, B.C. The conciliatory tone sharply contrasted with the heated exchange between the premiers following a November announcement that Ottawa would prioritize a new Alberta bitumen pipeline to the Pacific. Mr. Eby criticized the "secret" talks, while Ms. Smith dismissed his concerns as "un-Canadian." No private-sector proponent has come forward, and the preferred route is still undisclosed.
