The National Post reports in its Friday edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said first nations involvement will be crucial to advancing a proposal for a pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast, made possible though a recent agreement with Ottawa. Postmedia's Devon Dekuyper writes that on Thursday, Ms. Smith noted that while a route for a pipeline to the West Coast also has yet to be determined, "indigenous participation will remain essential." With plans to submit a proposal for the pipeline by Canada Day, Ms. Smith's timeline is tight, but she expressed confidence that first nations communities could be swayed by the potential benefits of such a project. She said: "Let's say that the first nations communities own a 30-per-cent stake in the pipeline, and let's say that the revenues generated in tolls is $1-billion per year. That is an extraordinary amount of money for some of these communities." Ms. Smith also plans to engage indigenous companies in the planning and construction of the project, which she said will both inform decisions from an environmental and cultural sensitivity standpoint. Several first nations groups have spoken out against the pipeline since November's memorandum of understanding.
