The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the U.S. military announced its 10th consecutive night of strikes on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, following the death of another American service member. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that this action comes after Iran attacked American allies Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, where the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet is based. As the United States and Iran move closer to war, hope emerged diplomatically with Iran's Interior Minister visiting Pakistan for talks. The escalation has pushed oil prices higher. Brent crude traded Monday above $88 (U.S.) a barrel and regular gasoline in the U.S. climbed to an average of $4 a gallon (U.S.), keeping pressure on Americans' wallets ahead of midterm elections this fall. Iran-backed rebels in Yemen announced plans to block Saudi oil shipments in the Red Sea, raising concerns about a new threat to energy markets. Yemen's Houthi, who are backed by Iran, said they would block shipping between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in response to an attack on Sanaa International Airport last week that they blamed on Saudi Arabia. With the strait blocked, Saudi Arabia is using a pipeline to the Red Sea for oil exports.
