Globe says Cap Power, TransAlta bullish on datacentres

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Nov. 5, edition that Alberta's datacentre policies could attract projects to the province and help avoid the development pushback seen in the United States, say the chief executive officers of Capital Power and TransAlta, Avik Dey and Joel Hunter. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that Alberta is determined to be a prime location for datacentres. The province launched its datacentre strategy in late 2024, promising a "concierge service" to help projects come to fruition in a bid to capture $100-billion of investment within five years. In total, there are 20 active datacentres in Alberta, with another 149 announced and four under construction. The province prioritizes projects that come with the ability to generate their own power to avoid straining the public grid. For electricity producers such as Capital Power and TransAlta, taking advantage of Alberta's huge natural-gas reserves to build facilities that will power datacentres is a burgeoning economic opportunity. Mr. Dey and Mr. Hunter say there has been a sea change in how the sector views Alberta compared with just one year ago. They both expect that interest to spur a bevy of projects in the province.
