Globe says Ford, others told Gordie Howe bridge to open

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Canadian-built Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ont., and Detroit is set to open shortly despite efforts by President Donald Trump to block it. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that the new span is expected to trigger a toll price war with the Ambassador Bridge, benefiting users as both operators compete for traffic. The opening of the Gordie Howe bridge was uncertain in February when Mr. Trump threatened to block it unless Ottawa granted Washington half ownership. Canada funded the bridge, which is jointly owned with Michigan; Ottawa has not agreed to his demands. Mr. Trump has not publicly changed his stance, but Prime Minister Mark Carney and Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens expect the bridge to open by the end of the week. However, Mr. Dilkens and others acknowledged that the event could be delayed again if Mr. Trump made a late intervention. The bridge's opening would be a rare example of progress in Canada-U.S. relations, as Canadian steel, aluminum, autos and lumber face U.S. protectionist tariffs, while negotiations for the renewal of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement progress slowly. Mr. Dilkens said a formal bridge opening is likely Monday.
