The National Post reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's comments Thursday that the response to the "threat" of United States antagonism to Canada is "unity" among the regions were backed by several premiers at the first minister's meeting in Charlottetown this week. The Post's Stewart Lewis writes that the PM spoke at the conference with premiers, following the Trump administration's announcement of new 50-per-cent tariffs on Canadian imports, reportedly in retaliation for Canada's tariffs on U.S. autos and alcohol boycotts. The recent U.S. trade actions are "unilateral and unwarranted," Mr. Carney said Thursday. "Our unity is our greatest strength." He noted, "We are in a stronger position than we were 18 months ago when this trade war began." Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was counting on Ottawa to manage the situation. Mr. Ford said: "It's a Team Canada approach led by the Prime Minister, and that's what we're going to focus on. We'll take his lead, and we all have to be united. ... You know, it's very hard to deal with President Trump when he changes his mind every single day." Mr. Ford said at one moment Mr. Trump is onside with the PM, the next he turns on him like a "rabid dog."
