The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Nov. 22, edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is resisting British Columbia's opposition to a coast-bound oil pipeline, emphasizing that being part of "Team Canada" means collaborating to market Alberta's oil. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that the Alberta and federal governments are negotiating an energy accord to support Alberta's oil and gas sector, potentially involving a new pipeline to B.C.'s north coast. This would need an exemption from the federal ban on oil-tanker traffic. Ms. Smith said Friday, "If we're going to get a deal, it will be in a matter of weeks." A concrete plan for the pipeline is lacking; there is no route or proponent, and it faces strong opposition from B.C. Premier David Eby. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe claimed involvement in Alberta-Ottawa discussions, prompting Mr. Eby to accuse him and Ms. Smith of jeopardizing economic development through "secret" talks on oil pipelines in his province. While Ottawa has not publicly weighed in on the bubbling tensions between the provinces. On Friday Ms. Smith said "the ball is in Prime Minister Mark Carney's court" to address B.C.'s discontent over the pipeline issue.
