The Financial Post reports in its Friday, Jan. 30, edition that Meta will double capital spending to as much as $135-billion (U.S.) this year, an all-in bet on artificial intelligence. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Tesla will spend $20-billion this year on pursuits including AI, self-driving vehicles and robotics -- almost double Wall Street estimates -- and plow another $2-billion into chief executive officer Elon Musk's XAI start-up. Mr. Musk also said Tesla needs to build its own semiconductor factory. Investors should look forward to "a major AI acceleration" that has been brewing within the tech industry for more than a year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Wednesday's earnings call. Meta shares jumped 11 per cent in New York after better-than-expected results and a strong ads business reassured investors about its investment plans. Microsoft's results highlighted the fragility of investor sentiment around AI and its funding. It reported higher-than-expected quarterly capex numbers while barely meeting expectations for its Azure cloud business, prompting investors to send the shares down by as much as 12 per cent after U.S. trading began Thursday -- its worst intraday drop in almost six years.
