The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Tesla enjoyed strong sales of its Model 3 vehicle in Canada during the third quarter as shipments began to arrive from China this year. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post says that DesRosiers Automotive Consultants attributed the bump in sales to Tesla's "aggressive Canadian pricing," with some trims priced 25 per cent lower than in the United States. Chinese-made electric vehicles started entering Canada again in the spring, after Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a deal with President Xi Jinping to allow as many as 49,000 EVs into the country in a 12-month period at a reduced tariff rate of 6.1 per cent. Prior to that, Chinese EVs were essentially blocked from the market by a 100-per-cent surtax that Canada implemented in 2024. Mr. Carney has said that in the short term, most of vehicles shipped under the quota will be Teslas. Government data show nearly 16,000 EVs have arrived from China since May, with half of those priced below $35,000. Tesla's overall third-quarter sales were stronger than expected, delivering 486,532 vehicles the worldwide. The results were encouraging for the company as it grappled with competition in China and sluggish demand in the U.S.
