Now Mr. Trump has imposed new 50-per-cent tariffs on $20-billion (U.S.) of Canadian imports, adding to existing levies on autos, steel, aluminum, forestry and more. Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed further retaliation, while the White House has said it will hit back. It harms Canada's key trade relationship, impacting businesses, workers and consumers on both sides of the border. The Prime Minister gave a succinct explanation for why the deal unravelled: "We were not prepared to compromise Canada's sovereignty or to undermine key industries.
