Globe says Metro hears PrescribeIt audit not happening

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the Auditor-General rejected a parliamentary committee's call to audit the failed $298-million digital prescription program PrescribeIT, which saw thousands of pharmacies sign up to its program, including Loblaw-owned Shoppers Drug Mart, Metro and Walmart. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that Health Canada plans a separate review of Canada Health Infoway, which ran the program. Conservatives are disappointed with AG Karen Hogan's decision because they are not sure the government review will be comprehensive enough. Canada Health Infoway launched PrescribeIT in 2017 as part of "axe the fax" effort to replace fax machines with digital alternatives in sending prescriptions between doctors and pharmacists. Nearly $300-million has been spent on PrescribeIT. The program was shut down in most of the country last month because fewer than 5 per cent of prescriptions flowed through it. The program has been the subject of hearings at the House of Commons health committee in recent months. Infoway chief executive officer Michael Green, was dismissed by the organization's board after an appearance at the health committee in April. Telus was PrescribeIT's principal vendor.
