The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that CI Global Asset Management's Ali Pervez recommends buying Walmart. The Globe's Shirley Won writes that Walmart, the multinational discount retailer and grocer, has increased its yearly dividend for 53 consecutive years. It is a defensive business that gets most of its sales from the United States, Mr. Pervez says. The company has a long sales growth history, which is reflected in its dividend growth. The company's omnichannel strategy over the past decade has included building distribution centres, fulfilment centres, an on-line marketplace for third party sellers, an advertising business and a membership sales program. Although its stock may seem pricey at 35 times 2028 earnings, its total growth rate will continue to accelerate, Mr. Pervez argues. Walmart's stock, which has pulled back amid concerns about price competition and rising fuel costs, now has a better entry point. Risks include financial stress among lower-income shoppers and competition from Amazon.
