The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Sept. 2, edition that a source said Tuesday that Chevron plans to expand operations in Venezuela shortly after President Donald Trump announced a deal to develop the country's oil reserves and involve the Pentagon in the profits. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Chevron is the second-largest United States oil company and the only one with a major presence in Venezuela. The White House confirmed on Monday it is partnering with North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) as part of Mr. Trump's push to tap into Venezuela's oil industry. The agreement has garnered skepticism from analysts who believe it will take years to revive Venezuela's production. They have questioned whether Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodrguez has the legal authority to give Chevron 100-year rights over 17 oil fields with reserves of 65 billion barrels -- and whether future Venezuelan or American administrations would overturn the agreement. On Monday, Mr. Trump added that Exxon Mobil was "going in," but quipped he was inclined to leave the oil giant out of Venezuela after chief executive officer Darren Woods called the country "uninvestable."
