Harbourfront Wealth Management Inc. has won a judgment in the Supreme Court of British Columbia against a man accused of defrauding the firm through a series of money transfers in the spring of 2025. Harbourfront said that the fraudster, posing as a wealthy investor using the name Robert Samuels, claimed to have received money through an inheritance and a business sale. He then made trades and transfers that left Harbourfront out $504,152.

The victory for Harbourfront is contained in a judgment handed down on Wednesday, Jan. 7. A judge has ordered the defendant to pay $504,152 plus Harbourfront's court costs. The decision is one handed down by default, or without any participation by the defendant.

While the judgment is a victory in name for Harbourfront, the firm's chances of collecting the full amount appear slim. Harbourfront was unable to serve the fraudster with the lawsuit nor does it have the man's real name. (It lists him as a John Doe in court documents.)

Ah, yes. A John Doe judgement. You can take that to the bank, right?

Let's hope that another account isn't opened in the name of Jane Doe, spouse of John Doe.
