The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a weak 58-88-164 as the TSX Venture Exchange fell two points to 694. Yes, it was another week, another seven days traversing an endless prairie for rough diamond prices, but the topographical map of Paul Zimnisky's global rough diamond price index masks a subtle decline in prices. A modest rebound from a multiyear low of 123.2 points began in early February, but it foundered in early March at about 128 points.

This week, Mr. Zimnisky has set his index at 126.5 points, down 0.1 point from a week ago and off 0.2 point from where we thought the index then was. (Mr. Zimnisky corrects his index to accommodate late-to-arrive data, often tweaking a few -- even several -- of the most recent weeks.) Either way, his chart is a welcome relief from what diamond miners and investors saw from him through the last 10 months of 2022 and all of 2023 and 2024, when they needed Sherpas to traverse the descent.
