New York spot gold rose $5.50 to $2,057.50 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange added 6.07 points to 557.12 while the TSX gold index added 2.21 points to 290.28. Most Canadian-listed gold miners moved higher today, and several did so with enthusiasm. Novagold Resources Inc. (NG), which added 14 cents to $4.91 on 239,000 shares, and Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD), which rose 28 cents to $17.62 on 1.59 million shares, helped lead the way.

Neither company had news, but one that did, Jody Kuzenko's Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG), leapt 76 cents to $15.70 on 558,000 shares. Torex cheered word today that its miners have just achieved a successful breakthrough of the Guajes tunnel, which now connects the existing El Limon Guajes operations north of the Balsas River with the growing resource at Media Luna on the south side.

Ms. Kuzenko, president, called the connection "a critical milestone" in the development of the Media Luna portion of the company's Morelos property, leaving Media Luna on track for first concentrate production late next year. The Guajes tunnel, she cheers, will be the primary conduit for transporting ore and waste from the Media Luna deposit to the processing plant without having to deal with a river crossing. This, she enthuses, "will materially improve efficiencies associated with the movement of employees, contractors, equipment, services and supplies between both locations."
