New York spot gold rose $13.10 to $2,081.10 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange added 4.17 points to 561.29 while the TSX gold index gained 2.12 points to 292.40. Most Canadian-listed gold miners moved higher today, so spare a moment of consolation for shareholders of SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM), which lost nine cents to $14.55 on 661,000 shares.
There were some energetic gainers: Matt Badylak's Galiano Gold Inc. (GAU), which jumped 23 cents to $1.10 on 7.75 million shares Thursday and another four cents on 700,000 shares Friday, tacked on another 13 cents to $1.27 on 338,000 shares today. The gains follow word that the company is buying the 45-per-cent interest in the Asanko mine held by a former partner, Gold Fields Ltd.
Frank Giustra and Shane Williams's West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) had an upward jog, adding five cents to 82 cents on 1.06 million shares. The company had news today -- if a rambling, self-congratulating end-of-year address by Mr. Williams counts as news. (If you were looking for something new, it does not, but if you're intrigued by stories of how Mr. Williams, president and chief executive officer, grew up in Ireland and worked as a gopher in his father's limestone quarry, have a read.)
