New York spot gold fell $15.60 to $2,170.50 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 3.29 points to 553.17 while the TSX gold index rose 0.37 point to 277.18. Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (WPM) helped lead a healthy contingent of gold miners northward today, as it added 56 cents to $61.44 on 2.04 million shares. New Gold Inc. (NGD) led a larger group lower, as it lost eight cents to $2.21 on 3.67 million shares. Lundin Mining Corp. (LUN) was another in retreat today. It fell 42 cents to $13.23 on 12.69 million shares. Lundin has been gaining altitude since it bottomed near $8 in November, with March a particularly strong month.
Kevin Bullock's Signal Gold Inc. (SGNL) rose one cent to 9.5 cents on 665,000 shares on word it has "initiated a process ... to evaluate potential strategic alternatives to advance its Goldboro project" in Nova Scotia. Goldboro is well advanced through the exploration and permitting processes, so the possibilities essentially are seeking cash to build a mine, finding a partner with cash -- or selling the project to a well-heeled developer.
