New York spot gold rose $6.10 to $2,170.50 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 5.41 points to 546.90 while the TSX gold index gained 1.08 points to 275.58. Most gold miners gained ground on Canadian exchanges today. Fortuna Silver Mine Inc. (FVI) helped lead the way with a 12-cent rise to $4.72 on 862,000 shares. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) helped as well, adding 17 cents to $4.21 on 2.95 million shares. Bullion's rising tide did not buoy all boats, as Aya Gold & Silver Inc. (AYA) fell 19 cents to $12.10 on 558,000 shares.

And now for the news: Andrew Chubb's Awale Resources Ltd. (ARIC) soared 40 cents to 80 cents on 9.21 million shares on word it has drilled a 32-metre interval grading 45.7 grams of gold per tonne at its Odienne project in Ivory Coast. "No large nugget effect carries the interval," the company proclaimed, adding the hole yielded "just continuous high-grade mineralization." (Yes, the mineralization was continuous, but the grades were markedly variable: An eight-metre bonanza-grade stretch averaged 126.7 grams per tonne in the upper part of the zone while the bottom 11 metres managed just 6.1 grams per tonne.)
