New York spot gold rose $18.30 to $2,378.50 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 0.95 point to 570.89, while the TSX gold index added 1.43 points to 312.52. Most gold miners with Canadian listings gained ground today. Mineros SA (MSA) added eight cents to $1.25 on 257,000 shares without benefit of news. Also silent was Victoria Gold Corp. (VGCX), but it nevertheless gained 18 cents to $7.05 on 726,000 shares. Silvercrest Metals Inc. (SIL) jumped 59 cents to $10.40 on 1.42 million shares, but that followed word its Las Chispas mine produced nearly 15,000 ounces in the first quarter.

Michael Hodgson's Serabi Gold PLC (SBI) was headlong in retreat, dropping 20 cents to $1.24 on 14,000 shares today, but remember that it surged 36 cents to $1.44 on 29,000 shares yesterday. That followed word that the company produced just over 9,000 ounces of gold in the first quarter -- its best quarter in three years. Much of the gold came from the Palito operation in Brazil, with the rest coming from Coringa, another Brazilian mine. This was Palito's weakest quarter in over a year, but Coringa was a star, nearly doubling its average production achieved in the first three quarters of 2023.
