New York spot gold rose $9.20 to $2,387.10 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 3.87 points to 567.02, while the TSX gold index added 1.81 points to 314.33. Most gold miners with Canadian listings began Friday tentatively, with modest gains or advances. Mineros SA (MSA) was weak off the hop, on its way to a five-cent drop to $1.20 on 196,000 shares. Then again, remember that it rose eight cents yesterday to $1.25 on 257,000 shares.

Argonaut Gold Inc. (AR) was not a major mover but it did trade busily, ending the day up one-half cent to 41.5 cents on -- hold onto your hats -- 127.6 million shares. (Now that you have caught your breath, note that Haywood Securities crossed a 121.4-million-share block at 40 cents on the Omega exchange, just after the normal TSX close.)

Darrell Rader and Peter Megaw's Minaurum Gold Inc. (MGG) lost two cents to 26.5 cents on 1.19 million shares Thursday. Late in the afternoon it said it is offering up to 24 million shares at 25 cents, seeking $6-million for further work on its Alamos silver project in Sonora, Mexico, and for working capital and general expenses. The placement could bring in another $1-million if the company's agent, Red Cloud Securities Inc., exercises a greenshoe option.
