New York spot gold fell $5.80 to $2,308.10 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 3.22 points to 590.02 while the TSX gold index climbed 1.78 points to 318.91. Most gold miners listed in Canada gained ground today. In a belated reaction to assays revealed yesterday from Cabacal, Meridian Mining UK Societas (MNO) added 7.5 cents to 56 cents on 2.14 million shares. Gatos Silver Inc. (GATO) was strong early but ended the day down seven cents to $14.37 on 11,000 shares. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) had an off day to star but closed up 14 cents to $16.73 on 66,000 shares.
Shane Williams's West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) slid seven cents to 69 cents on 9.61 million shares following halt-inducing word late Tuesday that it is selling 27.78 million regular shares at 72 cents and 11.24 million charity flow-through shares at 89 cents. The bought-deal financing is designed to raise $30-million -- $34.5-million if the underwriters exercise their 15-per-cent greenshoe option.
