Woah! New York spot gold slumped $88.80 on Friday, closing at $2,287.20. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 13.73 points to 588.25 while the TSX gold index slid 18.52 points to 311.32. Advancers were as rare as gold today, although Atico Mining Corp. (ATY) did manage a 1.5-cent gain to 22.5 cents on 56,000 shares. On the other hand, Calibre Mining Corp. (CXB) dropped 17 cents to $1.79 on 8.82 million shares and Iamgold Corp. (IMG) kept it company with a 52-cent drop to $4.93 on 5.76 million shares.
Good news failed to buoy gold miners today. Rodrigo Barbosa's Aura Minerals Ltd. (ORA) declared a 35-U.S.-cent semi-annual dividend, an increase over the 25 U.S. cents it paid six months ago and the 14 U.S. cents it paid shareholders a year ago. Nevertheless, Aura's stock fell 86 cents to $11.91 on 21,000 shares on the news. Mr. Barbosa, president and chief executive officer, was "delighted" with Aura's first half results, which exceeded expectations.
