New York spot gold rose $29.90 Thursday, closing at $2,357.80. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.55 point to 572.43 while the TSX gold index added 6.81 points to 319.07. Most Canadian gold miners moved higher with bullion today. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) added 23 cents to $17.08 on 7.04 million shares, while Capstone Copper Corp. (CS) rose 31 cents to $9.62 on 4.81 million shares. Calibre Mining Corp. (CXB) traded frantically, dropping three cents to $1.86 on an eye-popping 86.4 million shares, although 79 million of those shares occurred in one BMO Nesbitt transaction during the preopen.
Jorge Ganoza's Fortuna Silver Mines Inc. (FVI) rose 17 cents to $6.98 on 1.63 million shares on word it has drilled a 17.8-metre true-width interval grading 23.7 grams of gold per tonne into the Kingfisher prospect at its Seguela mine in Ivory Coast. Three other holes at Kingfisher also yielded noteworthy results. Additional encouraging results were obtained from the Badior prospect and from the main Ancien deposit. At the former, an intercept returned 15.6 grams per tonne over a true width of 11.9 metres, while the top hit at Ancien returned 27.4 grams per tonne across 5.6 metres.
