New York spot gold rose $24.50 Wednesday, closing at $2,353.90. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 9.51 points to 576.27 while the TSX gold index added 10.34 points to 326.97. With bullion's jump, most Canadian gold miners gained ground. Lundin Mining Corp. (LUN) helped lead the way as it added 88 cents to $15.84 on 1.9 million shares. New Gold Inc. (NGD) was strong as well, as it added 18 cents to $2.88 on 2.02 million shares.

Even Yukon gold miner Victoria Gold Corp. (VGCX) managed a turnaround, adding two cents to 87 cents on 6.34 million shares. Victoria, a $7 stock early last week, traded as low as 80 cents yesterday as the company and the authorities assess just how damaging a rock slide at the Eagle mine's leach pad will be.

Anthea Bath's Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (WDO) leapt 78 cents to $11.91 on 625,000 shares on word it has drilled a 2.6-metre true-width interval grading 93.7 grams of gold per tonne in the 6 Central target area of its Eagle River mine, near Wawa in Northern Ontario. A second hole among the 23 new tests into the same target also did well, yielding 71.7 grams per tonne across a true width of 2.8 metres.
