New York spot gold rose 20 cents Thursday, closing at $2,356. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 3.61 points to 579.88 while the TSX gold index added 0.57 point to 327.54. Today is Independence Day in the United States and as usual the Canadian markets are proving quite dependent upon American attention. Kinross Gold Corp. (K) yawned to an $11.33 close, up five cents on just 943,000 shares. Another usually busy trader experiencing a slow day was Iamgold Corp. (IMG). It rose six cents to $5.25 on 501,000 shares.
Among the few Canadian gold miners trading with vigour today was Victoria Gold Corp. (VGCX), a $7 stock barely a week ago, but which fell to just 80 cents yesterday -- the result of a late June rock slide in the company's leach pad at its Eagle mine in Yukon. The news remains uncertain at best, but hardy investors treating Victoria like a lottery ticket sent the stock up 28 cents to $1.15 on 2.3 million shares in early morning trading.
