New York spot gold rose $6.90 to close at $2,649.10 on Wednesday, while the TSX Venture Exchange dipped 3.22 points to 617.50 and the TSX gold index lost 1.39 points to 361.59. Most gold miners listed in Canada stayed close to home today. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) did add 27 cents to $19.68 on 2.33 million shares, while Newmont Corp. (NGT) dropped 29 cents to $58.21 on 528,000 shares. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) was among the most active, as it fell 34 cents to $24.45 on 4.80 million shares today.

Scott Berdahl's Snowline Gold Corp. (SGD) lost six cents to $5.34 on 189,000 shares on word of new assays from the Valley area of its Rogue project in rugged east-central Yukon. The headline hit among the 10 latest tests returned a 386-metre interval that began just below surface and averaged 1.08 grams of gold per tonne. A 120.5-metre core zone within that interval ran two grams per tonne. A second hole mustered 1.03 grams per tonne over 272.6 near-surface metres, while a third managed 1.35 grams per tonne over a deeper 174.5 metres.
