New York spot gold rose $1.10 to close at $2,632.20 on Friday, while the TSX Venture Exchange added 1.93 points to 610.22 and the TSX gold index fell 3.14 points to 355.36. Most gold miners listed in Canada moved lower today, although Newmont Corp. (NGT) bucked the trend, adding 66 cents to $58.19 on 308,000 shares. Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) was among those in decline today, as it slipped 24 cents to $8.01 on 1.26 million shares.
Today's biggest loser by far was Jody Kuzenko's Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG), which slid to an intraday low of $27.09, ending the day down $3.76 to $28.15 on 1.43 million shares. The slump followed word that three workers -- two employees and a contractor -- died of carbon monoxide gas exposure at the company's El Limon-Guajes (ELG) underground mine in Guerrero, Mexico. A fourth worker, another contractor, nearly succumbed, but he is expected to recover.
