New York spot gold rose $27.90 to close at $2,660.40 on Monday, while the TSX Venture Exchange added 4.53 points to 614.75 and the TSX gold index leapt 7.63 points to 362.99. Most gold miners listed in Canada moved higher today, several with vigour. Fortuna Mining Corp. (FVI) helped lead the way, adding 51 cents to $7.18 on 2.06 million shares, while SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM) jumped $1.09 to $10.10 on 2.2 million shares.

On Saturday, the company observed "areas of concern" with a tailings pile at its Turmalina mine in Brazil. The areas were sufficiently worrisome that Jaguar evacuated employees and nearby residents -- and good thing too, as the north wall of the pile soon slumped. There were no injuries and the situation remains under control, Jaguar says, but as part of that control, Jaguar has temporarily suspended operations at the mine.
