New York spot gold rose $18.70 to close at $2,696.50 Wednesday while the TSX Venture Exchange added 4.29 points to 607.82 and the TSX gold index added 3.17 points to 362.70. Most Canadian gold miners moved little today, although there was the usual small cadre of outliers. Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) dropped 28 cents to $8.33 on 1.44 million shares in silence today, while it took news to send Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) down 94 cents to $21.45 on 1.14 million shares. Eldorado said late yesterday that it had a good 2024, producing 520,000 ounces of gold, but investors were apparently expecting better news.

The market was also unimpressed with Matt Badylak's Galiano Gold Corp. (GAU), which fell 12 cents to $1.65 on 531,000 shares on its 2024 production report. The company managed 115,000 ounces from its 90-per-cent-owned Asanko mine in Ghana, which Mr. Badylak, president and chief executive officer, deemed to be "notable progress." He also said that Galiano also "progressed solutions to address crushing and milling challenges" identified early last year. Today's reaction suggests a need for further progress, more solutions and fewer challenges.
