New York spot gold jumped $17.70 to close at $2,714.60 Thursday while the TSX Venture Exchange added 0.62 point to 608.44 and the TSX gold index slipped 0.9 point to 361.80. Most Canadian gold miners moved lower today. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) bucked the trend, adding 19 cents to $7.84 on 2.84 million shares, while SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM) gained 49 cents to $11.08 on 1.04 million shares. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) on the other hand fell 74 cents to $18.73 on 3.84 million shares.

David Wolfin's Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (ASM) jumped 14 cents to $1.63 on 745,000 shares on word it has begun underground development at its La Preciosa deposit in Durango, Mexico. The deposit, adjacent to the company's Avino mine, had been acquired by the company nearly three years ago but it just recently received all the required permits to allow mining operations.

Mr. Wolfin, president and chief executive officer, was naturally enthused to get cracking, but he kept a tactful stance toward the bureaucrats. Getting the work under way "is a testament to the dedication and vision of the entire Avino team," he gushed, adding -- in a regulatory compliant yet shareholder supportive way -- that the move "underscores our firm commitment to responsible development and transformational growth" as the company advances one of Mexico's largest undeveloped silver deposits.
