New York spot gold rose $6.10 to $2,903.50 on Wednesday, while the TSX Venture Exchange added 7.08 points to 641.62 and the TSX gold index rose 6.55 points to 417.34. Silvercorp Metals Inc. (SVM) was one of the strong silent ones today, as it rose 40 cents to $4.97 on two million shares without aid of news. Lundin Gold Corp. (LUG) was also silent, but it dropped 84 cents to $38.36 on 845,000 shares.

Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) was strong but was anything but silent. Barrick's stock jumped $1.55 to $25.97 on 9.19 million shares on word that the company is sufficiently displeased with its share price that it intends to buy back up to $1-billion (U.S.) of its stock over the next 12 months. Over the past year, Barrick repurchased just under $500-million (U.S.) of its shares. The company has also declared a 10-U.S.-cent dividend for the fourth quarter, unchanged from recent quarters.

Brodie Sutherland's Tocvan Ventures Corp. (TOC) closed unchanged at 50 cents on 20,000 shares on word that it has now finished 10 core holes at its Gran Pilar silver project in Sonora, Mexico. Samples from the first three holes are already at the lab for assaying. With the results still pending and with core from the other seven holes still being logged and prepared, all the company has to cheer are some pretty pictures encased in thick geologese.
