New York spot gold rose $14.80 to $2,950.10 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 7.86 points to 626.83 while the TSX gold index added 2.37 points to 404.87. Endeavour Mining PLC (EDV) helped lead the retreat with a $1.38 drop to $30.45 on 1.24 million shares. It had a companion on the southbound trek, as Novagold Resources Inc. (NG) fell six cents to $4.27 on 623,000 shares. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (WDO) was among those headed higher today. It added 35 cents to $14.24 on 570,000 shares.
Two of today's decliners can share their sorrow: Greg Smith and Ross Beaty's Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) says that it is combining with -- taking over, more accurately -- Blayne Johnson and Darren Hall's Calibre Mining Corp. (CXB) to create a "major Americas-focused gold producer." Calibre slid 12 cents to $2.97 on 31.53 million shares on the news while Equinox, as low as $9.36 at one point today, managed to close one cent higher at $9.70 on 7.18 million shares. Calibre's shareholders will get 0.31 of an Equinox share according to the arrangement, a premium-free ratio roughly in line with Friday's closes.
