New York spot gold retreated another $23.60 to $3,292.90 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 1.19 points to 653.62 while the TSX gold index added 4.57 points to 473.76.
Today was an off day for several miners, especially those with a copper component. Lundin Mining Corp. (LUN), which was among the latter, fell 43 cents to $11.28 on 5.65 million shares. Another, Capstone Copper Corp. (CS), fell 19 cents to $6.64 on 6.75 million shares. There were a few northbound miners, but they are focused firmly on gold: Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (WPM) added $1.87 to $115.11 on 1.59 million shares as it led the way.
Oh, New Gold Inc. (NGD) did better than that as it added 89 cents to $5.49 on 11.31 million shares, but it had news. The company said late Tuesday that it had an "exceptionally positive" first four months of the year, resulting in a solid first quarter. The company said its adjusted net earnings for the quarter were "relatively in line with the prior-year period" -- a bit of obfuscation that translates to "a bit lower than." (Adjusted earnings were $12-million for the quarter, about $1.1-million less than a year ago.)
