New York spot gold fell $1.10 to $3,322.20 on Tuesday as the TSX Venture Exchange lost 8.60 points to 717.30. The TSX gold index retreated 7.64 points to 485.59 as most gold miners listed in Canada moved lower today. Artemis Gold Inc. (ARTG) took a hit unprodded by news, dropping $1.74 to $24.74 on 1.07 million shares. New Gold Inc. (NGD) kept it company, falling 13 cents to $6.53 on 3.28 million shares. Soma Gold Corp. (SOMA) was also silent, but it managed a nine-cent gain to $1.35 on 672,000 shares.

Gilbert Clark's Meridian Mining UK Societas (MNO) closed unchanged at 80 cents on 544,000 shares on word it has drilled several intercepts of shallow high-grade gold, silver and copper mineralization at its Santa Helena project in the Cabacal region of Brazil. The intercepts included hits of 1.6 grams of gold and 61.2 grams of silver per tonne, along with 1.2 per cent copper, 6.7 per cent zinc and 1.3 per cent lead. That infill hole was drilled along strike to the east of its earlier encouragement.
