New York spot gold rose $1.90 Monday, closing at $3,335.90. The TSX Venture Exchange added 2.40 points to 757.62 while the TSX gold index leapt 7.49 points to 510.91. Most gold producers associated with copper moved lower today. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) was typical of those, as it fell 31 cents to $24.76 on 3.01 million shares. Oceanagold Corp. (OGC), up 53 cents to $19.89 on 1.57 million shares, was typical of the rest.
There were bigger moves, but they were driven by news. Nolan Watson's Sandstorm Gold Ltd. (SSL) jumped 81 cents to $13.96 on 12.6 million shares and Erfan Kazemi's Horizon Copper Corp. (HCU) leapt 78 cents to $1.94 on 13.28 million shares on word that they have agreed to merge with Bill Heissenbuttel's Nasdaq-listed Royal Gold Inc. (RGLD). (Royal Gold, having offered premiums to reach the deal, slid $11.58 (U.S.) to end the day at $168.24 (U.S.) on 3.05 million shares.)
