New York spot gold rose $13.20 on Thursday, pausing at $3,748.40. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 5.06 points to 920.18 and the TSX gold index added 8.28 points to 709.23. China Gold International Resources Corp. (CGG) did well, adding $1.27 to $24.49 on 94,000 shares, and so did Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (ASM), which added 46 cents to $6.68 on 1.12 million shares.
Aya Gold & Silver Inc. (AYA) had a tough day, dropping $2.37 to $12.93 on 21.89 million shares without news of its own. The slide -- Aya hit an intraday low of $11.95 -- was triggered by allegations from Blue Orca Capital, an activist short seller, that accused the company of fabricating as many as 50 million ounces of "phantom silver" at its Zgounder mine in Morocco in a 2021 resource update. Stay tuned for a reply from Aya, which was still mum at the close.
