New York spot gold's dalliance with the $4,000 mark continued today, as bullion casually drifted to and fro across a threshold deemed unimaginable a few years ago. Gold came to rest just south of the mark, ending the week at $3,999.60, up $23.40 on the day. The TSX Venture Exchange, above 1,030 just three weeks ago, rose 9.42 points to end the day at 885.31, while the TSX gold index reclaimed 10.64 points to 699.14. Just three weeks ago it had poked its nose above the 821-point mark. Novagold Resources Inc. (NG) helped lead a cadre of Canadian precious metals miners northward today, as it added 44 cents to $11.50 on 923,000 shares.
Juan Gavidia's Orvana Minerals Corp. (ORV) also did well, but it had news, having closed a $25-million (U.S.) secured prepayment facility and having arranged offtake agreements for copper cathodes and dore bars that would be produced from the company's Don Mario mine in Bolivia. The cash will fully finance the rest of the work needed to complete the Don Mario mine by the end of the year, the company says, with start-up expected early next year.
